Desjardins credit union data breach bigger than initially thought

The data breach suffered by Canada Desjardins credit union last year is bigger than initially thought, it affected all 4.2 million of its customers.

In June, Desjardins credit unionannounced a data breach that exposed personal banking information of 2.9 million customers. Unfortunately, the data breach is bigger than initially thought and affected all 4.2 million of bank customers.

Quebec provincial police “informed us that this breach of personal information concerns a greater number than that which was communicated in June,” Desjardins president and chief executive Guy Cormier told a news conference.

“It is 4.2 million, so all of our individual members, who are affected,”

The security breach took place in December, but law enforcement only revealed it in June 2019. Data was leaked after an ill-intentioned employee disclosed it to people outside the organization without any authorization.

At the time, authorities revealed that compromised data included 2.7 million individual members and 173,000 business members.

Exposed data included names, dates of birth, contact information and banking habits.

Desjardins credit union announced it would provide support to its customers in case of fraudulent activities related to the data breach.
